XBOX Surprises with NEW redesigned disc-less Xbox Series X

The new circular Xbox is set to feature a whopping 2TB SSD, an all new two-tone controller and modular thumbsticks.

With us pushing 3 years since the original release of the Xbox Series X and the PS5 it was only a matter of time till we saw a ‘refresh’ on the horizon. With rumors heating up about a PS5 Slim, PS5 Pro and new Nintendo Switch successor it was only a matter of time till we heard from Xbox and that time is finally here thanks to the court case between the FTC and Microsoft.

The forthcoming cylindrical Xbox Series X aims to eliminate the traditional disc drive in favor of expanded SSD storage, while also incorporating a Type-C power delivery port on the front panel. What are my thoughts on this transition to an all-digital platform? Frankly, I believe it's overdue. For years, I've bemoaned the inconvenience of awaiting delivery on release days, followed by the additional delay of installing games from discs to SSDs. Moreover, the antiquated practice of physically switching out game discs is a nuisance we can well afford to abandon. As fiber-optic internet gains ubiquity, enabling downloads of 100GB games in a matter of minutes, the obsolescence of physical game media becomes increasingly evident. It seems the era of disc-based games is ready for retirement, much like the floppy disk before it.

What I perhaps find more interesting, is the new Xbox controller codenamed ‘Sebille’. The new controller should be announced later THIS YEAR. It will now include a litany of new features.

• Two-tone color scheme

• Bluetooth 5.2 support

• Direct-to Cloud support meaning easier pairing with cloud gaming tv’s and devices.

• New Accelerometer for Gyro support with new Lift-to-Wake feature

• VCA Haptics (precision haptic feedback) which double as speakers.

• New Modular Sticks + Quieter buttons

• Rechargable and Swappable Battery (Hurray! About time Xbox 👌😁)

I can't help but feel a bit disappointed that we won't see a trackpad or adaptive triggers, features that would bring the controller to parity with the DualSense.

The new Xbox Series X design will feature Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 for a faster, more reliable connection with greater range. They’ll also be reducing the consoles die to 6nm which will improve efficiency and wattage leading to a 15 percent power reduction. They’ll also be targeting the same $499 launch price.

We should also see a new refreshed Xbox Series S with many of the same upgrades (likely the connectivity upgrades and new controller.)

We’re likely to see these new ‘refreshed’ Xbox consoles in later 2024 - with the Series S launching next September and the ‘cylindrical’ Series X in November.

The big question on my mind is ‘Will there be an APU upgrade?"‘ or will they be keeping the same architecture.
